About Advertising Design

Internet Advertising Design

Internet advertising consists of three main categories: Pay Per Click (PPC), email marketing and web space ads or banner ads.

Banner Ads

Banner ads are the ads at the top or sides of web pages. Because of very tight size limitations, banner ads need to be succinct. They should be designed to attract web traffic and not necessarily convey a complete message or story. The banner ads we create are usually animated GIFs, JPGs or Flash.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is sending a promotional message, for example a newsletter or advertisement, to a prospective or current customer. What distinguishes legitimate email advertising from spam is that the person receiving the email has given permission to be sent a promotional message.

An important tip about email marketing: do not send email marketing from your own server. Before you know it you may find your server's IP address blacklisted by internet service providers (ISP) for sending spam. As a consequence you won't be able to send email to the ISP's customers. Use a legitimate email marketing provider, such as Constant Contact or iContact, who have agreements with the major ISPs and will provide you (or us) with legal opt-in and opt-out options.

PPC Advertising

PPC advertising is a listing in a search engine where the advertiser pays when their listing is clicked. There are many PPC providers; Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter are the most prominent.

Print Advertising Design

Magazine advertising and newspaper advertising, advertising supplements, full page ads and space ads, are still pretty much everywhere. But isn't print dead? Not yet. I don't know about you, but we still like our newspapers and magazines, and as long as there are publications to advertise in there will be print ads.

Specific interest publications, like trade or professional magazines and newspapers, provide a targeted opportunity to promote your message. For some markets, print advertising is the most effective way to send your message because everyone in the business reads the publication.

Generally speaking, print ads can say a bit more than banner ads but they still need to be concise, with a strong, focused message and a clear call-to-action.

A print ad should consist of some or all of the following parts, space permitting:

  1. a visually compelling image
  2. a meaningful, thought-provoking headline
  3. direct and persuasive body copy
  4. a clear call-to-action
  5. the signature consisting of the logo, tagline, disclaimers, etc.
